Why it matters

Why is it important to replace the seal in good time?

A worn seal is one of the most common causes of draughts and cold. Timely replacement saves on heating costs and protects the window structure from damage.

  • Draughts and cold Cracked or hardened rubber no longer fits tightly against the frame — cold air freely enters the room.
  • High heating bills Even small gaps in the window seal increase heat loss — heating costs can rise by 15–25%.
  • Damp and mould Moisture gets in through a damaged seal, encouraging mould on the frame and in wall corners.
  • Street noise A worn seal leaves micro-gaps for sound — a new seal significantly improves sound insulation.
  • Window lifespan A properly working seal protects the glass unit and frame from moisture — the window lasts much longer.

Frequently asked questions

How often does a window seal need replacing?+
A quality EPDM seal lasts 10–15 years. The first signs that replacement is needed: the rubber has become stiffer, cracks, or no longer returns to its original shape after being compressed. Regular treatment with silicone spray can extend its life.
What is the difference between EPDM, TPE and silicone seals?+
EPDM (synthetic rubber) is the most common — good UV resistance, a service life of 15+ years. TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is more flexible in the cold, suitable for north-facing windows. Silicone seal has the highest flexibility and heat resistance and is often used when restoring wooden windows.
How can I check whether the seal still works?+
A simple test: place a sheet of paper between the window and the frame, close the window and try to pull the sheet out. If the sheet pulls out easily with no resistance, the seal no longer provides a tight fit and needs replacing.
Can I replace the seal myself?+
In theory yes, but in practice incorrect installation often causes draughts or serious damage. A specialist ensures the correct tension, the right profile choice for the window type, and a warranty. Professional replacement is often more cost-effective than DIY + the cost of redoing it.
Does replacing the seal help with sound insulation?+
Yes, a new seal can significantly reduce street noise. A worn seal leaves micro-gaps through which not only air but also sound passes. After replacement, clients often note that the home has become noticeably quieter.

Check your seal today

The paper test — 30 seconds to find out if the seal works

Take an ordinary piece of A4 paper and place it between the window sash and the frame. Close the window as usual and try to pull the paper out. If the paper comes out with no resistance, the seal is worn and no longer provides a tight seal. If the paper holds firmly and you feel resistance, the seal still works. Do this test around the whole perimeter of the window — it may turn out that only part of the seal is worn.
