Glass unit types and insulation

Below are the most common glass unit types with their heat transfer coefficient Ug (W/m²K). The lower the Ug, the better the insulation and the lower the heating bills.

Improve insulation with a Thermo spacer

Besides the type of glass unit, the spacer bar between the panes makes a significant contribution to insulation. By replacing the standard aluminium spacer with a Thermo spacer (made of plastic or composite material), you can significantly improve the window’s overall insulation.

What it gives in practice:

  • improving the window’s overall heat loss (U-value) by about 5–18%
  • improving the window’s heat transfer coefficient by about 0.15–0.2 W/m²K
  • reducing heat loss through the glass unit edge by up to 30% compared with an aluminium spacer
  • reducing condensation at the glass edges by up to 70%
  • the inner glass edge becomes warmer by 4–9°C in winter

A Thermo spacer is a simple, effective way to improve the glass unit’s performance — it is fitted when the new glass unit is made, with no extra installation cost.

Frequently asked questions

Why does fogging appear between the panes?+
Fogging between the panes occurs when the glass unit’s airtight seal is damaged. Water vapour gets into the space between the panes and condenses. In that case the glass unit no longer provides insulation and must be replaced — it cannot be repaired without full replacement.
How long does glass unit replacement take?+
Replacing one standard glass unit takes 30–60 minutes. Replacing the glass units in a whole flat usually takes 1 working day. A new glass unit is ordered to exact measurements, which takes 3–7 working days.
Can just the glass be replaced, keeping the old frame?+
Yes, that is exactly how we work. The frame stays original — this is cheaper and faster than fully replacing the window. The new glass unit is fitted into the same frame using the original fixings.
What is the difference between a single- and double-chamber glass unit?+
A single-chamber glass unit has two panes and one air or argon chamber. A double-chamber one has three panes and two chambers. Such a glass unit has a heat transfer coefficient about three times better than a single-chamber one, so it provides significantly better insulation.
What does Low-E glass mean?+
Low-E (low-emissivity) glass has a special metallic coating that reflects heat back into the room in winter and keeps it out in summer. It reduces heating costs by 15–30% compared with an ordinary glass unit and is recommended as standard when choosing a new glass unit.
Can a glass unit be replaced in winter?+
Yes, a glass unit can be replaced at any time of year, even in hard frost. In plastic and aluminium frames it can be done in winter, but in wooden frames the work requires above-zero temperatures, because the glass unit is sealed with special window silicone, which starts to harden and lose elasticity in sub-zero conditions.

Find out when it’s time to replace a glass unit

How to check in 10 seconds whether a glass unit is damaged

Carefully look at the glass from inside against the light. If you see fogging, a grey film or condensation between the panes (not on the inner or outer surface), the glass unit’s seal has failed.
