Why is adjustment important?
Windows and doors shift over time — even in a new building. Building settlement, temperature swings and daily use gradually change the position of the hinges and locking mechanisms. The result: gaps, draughts and incomplete closing, often noticed only when it gets cold in winter.
Heat loss is often blamed on the window, but the real cause is inaccurate adjustment. If the sash presses unevenly around the perimeter, the seal does not work properly — and heat escapes. Studies show that up to 30% of heating energy can be lost for this reason.
Equally important is security. A loosely closed window or a balcony door with a sagging hinge is easier to open from outside. Adjustment ensures the lock or handle works with the right resistance and the sash presses along the entire length of the frame.
Finally — condensation and mould. If cold air can get in through the smallest gap, moisture forms on the frame and windowsill. This is the cause of mould in many flats where the windows seem to look fine. To avoid it, regular servicing is enough: cleaning and lubricating the hardware once or twice a year significantly extends the window’s life, while adjustment only needs doing every two to three years — or whenever the first signs appear. This approach protects the window for 10–15 years without major repairs.

A technician’s tip
Don’t ignore unusual noises — better to fix them in time
If you hear unusual noises when opening or closing a window or door — squeaking, knocking or friction — do not put off a visit. Such sounds often mean the hardware is already working under extra strain. If the problem is not fixed in time, it can lead to complete hardware failure — a situation where the window or door can no longer be opened or closed. A technician may not be available immediately, and a window or door with a damaged mechanism cannot wait — especially in winter, when every hour of delay means cold indoors. Contact us at the first signs — it is much faster, cheaper and easier than an emergency repair.
